At the age of 18, Catherine Starkman began her career as a photographer, working for the press, fashion and doing street reporting in black and white. At the same time, she started some classes at the Beaux Arts of Paris and at different painting workshops. The legendary french comedian, Coluche discovered Starkman’s photos and asked her to be the photographer for his Photo comic book entitled "The Poor are Idiots". Catherine worked with Coluche on this project for several years.
Then turning to painting, Starkman began a series of large formats featuring geometric, abstract and figurative, silhouettes and portraits often African inspired. Starkman moved in the 90’s from Paris to New York where she lived for nearly 20 years.
Catherine has practiced painting, drawing and photography throughout her career.
Upon returning to France, she set up her studio in Provence.
Starkman exhibits in France, Europe and the United States. Her works are part of public and private collections.
Last year, she exhibited her abstract paintings at the Yoshii Gallery in Paris, her African-inspired paintings at the Gallifet Art Center in Aix en Provence and her photos at the Museum of Photography, in Charleroi, Belgium.
A l’âge de 18 ans, Catherine Starkman débute sa carrière en tant que photographe, elle travaille pour la presse, la mode et fait du reportage de rue en noir et blanc. Coluche découvre ses photos et lui demande d’être la photographe de ses romans photos « Les pauvres sont des cons ». Ils travailleront ensemble plusieurs années.
Puis Catherine Starkman se tourne vers la peinture, commence une série de grands formats, géométriques, abstraits et figuratifs, silhouettes et portraits d’inspiration africaine. Catherine Starkman pratique la peinture, le dessin et la photographie tout au long de sa carrière. Son œuvre picturale se développe par grandes séries, entre abstraction et figuration, fiction et non fiction. Son travail, caractérisé par une recherche sur la couleur et la matière, l’a emmené de Paris à New York où elle a passé près de 20 ans.
De retour en France, elle installe son atelier dans le Sud. Elle expose en France, en Europe et aux Etats Unis. Ses œuvres font partie de collections publiques et privées.
En 2019, elle expose ses tableaux abstraits à la Galerie Yoshii à Paris, ses tableaux d'inspiration africaine au Gallifet Art Center et enfin ses photos au Musée de la photographie, à Charleroi en Belgique.
